Constructing Solutions to Construct a New Retail Location

When a major clothing retailer planned to open up a high end retail location, all the coordination of transporting construction materials to the site required a high attention to detail, shipment scanning, and milestone reporting. Having successfully worked with SGL on two previous store openings, the success of working on those projects the customer invited the SGL team to their 2024 RFP where we were selected to assist in transporting the construction materials for a new store opening in Frisco, TX.

Challenge

Store openings can vary in complexity. A store opening requiring the delivery of gondolas and other retail fixtures compared to building materials to construct a physical store has a more complex level of coordination. For our retail customer, the latter was the case. With a 5-month timeline and estimated 25 ocean containers and 28 air shipments, our team was tasked to support a new store opening by recovering materials from the Houston port and Dallas airport, bring to our SGL warehouse in Dallas, TX, and then deliver to site location in stages according to the construction plan.

Solution

Our team coordinated air & ocean recovery from the airport and port to delivering specific materials to the new store location, there was a need for collaborative team effort to coordinate deliveries to the store site. For each air & ocean recovery, shipments were taken to our facility in Dallas, TX, and materials were scanned to track milestones as required by the customer. Our teams tracked when shipments were received at warehouse, staged for pickup, loaded on delivery truck, and delivered – this information was critical to reporting which was done weekly, even daily at times as required. Throughout the project’s timeline, specific materials needed to be delivered from the warehouse to the new store location per the construction crew’s request. SGL coordinated with the construction crew directly and reported back to the customer with status updates along the way.

Results

SGL deliveries were on time and successful to aid in the construction of this new store. Overall the team delivered 25 containers, 600 pieces, weighing 175,000 kgs, to the store site. The team also delivered 28 air shipments, 115 pieces, weighing 10,000 kgs. Coordinating the shipment of materials according to the construction plans gave the customer peace of mind that the details of the project would be handled from recovery to delivery.
